Program Notes:

Musically, this piece is broadly divided into four sections. With the exception of one last final build-up of intensity in the last section (which finally curtails into a quiet ending), it is the middle two sections that contain strong, insistent build-ups of heavy and dense layers of sound (broken only by fleeting moments of repose).

The work starts quietly with upper strings only, followed by the lower strings and scattered speckles of upper winds. Section two becomes apparent with the entrance of the brass and piano, and a distinctly different sound in the strings and winds. This section continues to build in activity and changing character until the low growling of strings, piano, and brass announce the third section. This section quickly builds with several "false starts" of upwardly sweeping sound until it finally stays "up", only to break out into a string quartet with piano, and finally diminishes into mostly low strings again. The final section begins with low strings (col legno) and french horn, and ends in its final moments somewhat reminiscent of the beginning.
